Person County Beekeepers Association
Date: December 20, 2012
Location: Person County Cooperative Extension, Room 165
Present: Mary Deitz presiding, Lynn Wilson recording, 12 members and 2 guests.
Mary thanked members for an exciting year with Association volunteers at Person County Ag Day, Personality, Farmer’s Market and State Fair (with lots of ribbons!) Mary reports that she will make a presentation for the Kiwanis Club in February. Calvin Hester offered to help.
Mary shared Bee School posters for members to post. Several members plan to retake the class.
Lynn suggested that present members be introduced at classes that occur on regular club meeting nights to encourage new beekeepers to find mentors/partners for beekeeping, perhaps people who live near them or share goals, such as Certified Naturally Grown beekeeping. She said that the “Plant at Breeze” classes for new farmers began with a lecture and ended with a practical response from a farmer. Perhaps one or two current members of the club could share experiences after some presentations so class participants can (a) find out more about potential mentors’ approaches and (b) get the practical application of the material presented. Mary asked Lynn to share this suggestion with Inge, as VP responsible for programs, so that a list of current members with addresses can be shared with participants. It could be marked, to show their interest in mentoring/partnering and include a brief statement about their own beekeeping goals.
NEW LIFE MEMBERS
Mary moved that Todd Walker, Inge Kautzmann and Tim Gentry be given life memberships in the Person County Association in appreciation for all of their ongoing work for the Association. Lynn seconded, with a friendly amendment that Mary Deitz also be given a life membership for her significant work for the Club. Tom Savage seconded the amendment and the group approved the motion.
